On October 12, Shenzhen Customs confirmed that 10.6 tons of wooden handicrafts, earlier intercepted at Shekou Customs House, were made from endangered plants. By now, these handicrafts, worth 74,300 US dollars, have been under anti-smuggling investigation.

Several days earlier, Shekou Customs House received an export of wooden handicrafts like cabinets and table accessories totaling 10.6 tons. Through onsite inspection, customs officers suspected the products from endangered plants and the exporter had no certificate on the wood species. Through professional identification, it was confirmed that the handicrafts were made from the plants of Ambila rosewood, Fokienia hodginsii, camphorwood and Nanmu, in which Ambila rosewood is listed in Appendix Ⅱ of the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES) and the others belong to China’s Class-Ⅱ Protected Plants.
